Add a tree that’s already stressed from summer drought or carrying deadwood from an unpruned season, and you’ve got a tree that was fine all August and comes down in the first real November blow.

Signs a tree needs a professional look before storm season

Not every tree needs an arborist before winter. But a few warning signs mean it’s worth a call rather than waiting to see what happens:

A lean that’s new, or one that’s gotten more pronounced since last year, especially with soil lifting or cracking on the uphill side of the trunk. Deadwood in the upper canopy, since a windstorm will find dead branches before it finds anything else. Visible cracks or splits in the trunk or at major limb unions. Fungus or conks growing at the base, which often signals internal decay you can’t see from the outside. And any tree that’s already dropped a large limb this year without an obvious cause.

None of these automatically mean removal. Sometimes the fix is pruning back a heavy canopy so wind has less to grab. Sometimes it’s cabling and bracing a co-dominant stem that’s structurally weak but otherwise healthy. We handled a job in Albany not long ago where two large oaks sat tight against a house, a shop, and a greenhouse, close clearances, real consequences if something came down wrong. That’s a cabling and inspection job, not a removal, and it’s the kind of call that’s a lot cheaper before a storm than after one.

Crown thinning reduces the sail area a windstorm has to work with without changing the shape of the tree from the ground. And clearing deadwood before winter removes the branches most likely to snap first in a wind event, the ones that do the damage to a roof or a car below.
